$1,400 stimulus checks can fall prey to private debt collectors. Democrats want to prevent that.

The latest $1,400 stimulus checks aren’t being issued with any guidance that prevents debt collectors from seizing them. It’s a significant problem, as federal cash may not reach some of the low-income Americans who are grappling with unpaid bills.

While the sweeping $1.9 trillion stimulus that President Joe Biden signed into law on Thursday contained measures guarding the checks from other debts such as student loans, no similar protections are in place for private debts.
