Federal Reserve governor Lael Brainard stepped out of the shadow of Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen Monday and urged the central bank not to hike rates prematurely.
In a speech at the National Association for Business Economics, Brainard said that the risks to the U.S. economy are now to the downside and that it is important to “nuture” the recovery.
These risks “argue against prematurely taking away the support that has been so critical to [the U.S. economy’s] success,” Brainard said.
