U.S. economy shrank nearly 5% last quarter amid shutdowns, massive layoffs

The U.S. economy shrank at a 4.8% annual rate last quarter, the sharpest fall since the financial crisis of 2008 and a small glimpse of what’s to come as much of the country remains under lockdown orders to contain the spread of coronavirus.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that it was the first time in six years that the country’s gross domestic product posted a quarterly drop, ending the longest economic expansion on record.
