Every few months, a new financial technology “disruptor” enters the payments marketplace. The sector’s old guard — American Express, Mastercardand Visa — must be getting tired of this trend.
In 1998, when PayPal Holdings was established, the company had lofty goals. In addition to launching a global payments platform, it also aimed to disintermediate fiat currency itself, the ultimate trade disruption. So far, fiat currenciesare doing fine, but so is PayPal, year after year, dominating the online-payments world.
